Katherine Somerville Johnson (known to family and friends as Kitty), the daughter of the late Robert Hunt and the late Carrie Powers was born on February 13, 1939 in Henderson, NC. God called her to eternal rest on July 21, 2021 at the Brian Center in Durham, NC.
Katherine was raised in the Greystone community and graduated from Henderson Institute in 1957. She received Christ at an early age at Young’s Memorial Holiness Church. After relocating to North Carolina Katherine joined Greater Joy Missionary Baptist Church and later The City and was a faithful member until her health declined.
Katherine moved to New York and married Wilbert Somerville. They later relocated to Philadelphia, PA where they raised their four children.
Katherine was employed as a private duty nurse for 11 years. She then went on to work for the Durham Public School System as a Child Nutritionist until she retired.
Katherine was preceded in death by her devoted son Wilbert Stanley Somerville II, ex-husband Wilbert Stanley Somerville, a brother, Joe L. Graham, and grandson, DayShawn Jones.
Katherine leaves to cherish her memory her three children: Deborah Somerville of Virgina Beach,VA, Gaile Somerville Sledge (Eric) of Wake Forest, NC, and Windell Stacey Somerville of Durham, NC. Her eight grandchildren: Stanley V. Somerville, Davette Sledge Harrison (Jerrel), Sierra Morgan (Sam), Brittney Somerville, Charles Perry, Raheem Webbe, Renardo Webbe, and Stasia Somerville; Nine great-grandchildren: Dyliyah, Stanajah, Kaitlynn, King, Cameron, Rahmir, Avery, Dallas, and RJ. Two daughters in law: Barbara Somerville of Greensboro, NC and Alysia Woods of Durham, NC. Four brothers: Robert H. Hunt (Yvonne) of Henderson, NC, Norman Hunt, Craig Hunt and Robert Hunt, Jr. Three sisters in law: Gloria J. Dunson (James C.) of Warrenton, NC, Lucy S. Spivey of Tennessee, and Maxine Graham of Durham, NC. Two brothers in law: Kermit Somerville, Jr. of Warrenton and Ronald Somerville of Henderson, NC. Three devoted friends Grace Graham, Mimi Spivey, and Ms. McCoy of Durham, NC and a host of other relatives.
