Jean Haskins Mebane was born on January 19, 1941 to the late Edward Lee Austin and Dorothy Mae Haskins in Durham, North Carolina. She was the oldest of 2 children.
After graduating from the Durham Public School system, she knew that she wanted to help take care of people in the medical profession. As such, she earned her Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate from Durham Technical Community College. She proudly worked for Hillcrest Convalescent Center and many other families conducting private duty work for well over 30 years.
Jean accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at a very young age. She faithfully served throughout the community and was a member of Greater Zion Wall Baptist Church. She had a natural ear for music, was given (or gifted) a piano, and was self-taught to play the many gospel songs that friends and family enjoyed. Jean’s talents led her to minister in song with the “Masonettes” a family singing group under the late Annie B. Mason, her maternal grandmother.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Edward Lee Austin and Dorothy Mae Haskins. Jean leaves to fondly cherish a brother Edward Haskins of Durham, NC; son Nicholas Eugene Daye of Durham, NC; four daughters Dempsey Jean Haskins, Sue Ann Michelle Day, and Sharon Denise Day all of Durham, NC, Larissa (Preston) Woods of Richmond, VA; grandchildren Dempsey Ramon, Shaquana, Terrance, Juwan (Christine), Shakayla, Nataja, Terry Jr., Jada, Justin, and Jackson; great-grandchildren Innocence, Aiyianna, Brian, Ava, Terrance, Jr., Kadence, Kierstyn, Islah, and Malaina; special grandchildren Chevel Jones and Nicole Pearson; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
