Cleveland Alston, the beloved son of the late Elonnie and Hattie Alston, was born on August 18, 1957, in Franklin County, North Carolina. He peacefully transitioned from this life on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at his home in Durham, North Carolina.
Cleveland grew up in Franklin County and was educated within the Franklin County Public School System. From a young age, he demonstrated a strong work ethic and a natural talent for automotive repairs, which he continued to cultivate throughout his life. He was also a dedicated employee of the Carolina Grill, where he worked faithfully for many years. Cleveland had a deep love for cars, often spending his free time racing, fishing, and hunting—activities that brought him immense joy and fulfillment.
Cleveland accepted Christ as his Savior early and became an active member of Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church in his youth. He remained a devoted church member until adulthood when he relocated to Durham.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers: Nathaniel Alston, Robert Alston Sr., and William Alston.
His passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his memory lives on through his family and loved ones.
Cleveland leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Leshonda “Pie” Johnson of Durham, NC; four grandsons, two granddaughters, and one great-grandson, all of Durham, NC. He is also survived by one sister, Clora Branch (Johnnie) of Louisburg, NC; four brothers: Elonie Alston Jr. (Rosalyn) of Chapel Hill, NC, Ervin Alston of Durham, NC, Jurother Alston (Lynette) of Carrboro, NC, and Larry Alston (Jenny) of Chapel Hill, NC. In addition, he is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.
