He graduated from Douglas Byrd High School in 1985, where he was a star in the marching band. He went on to graduate from Fayetteville Technical Institute in 1988, gathering friends all along the way. He married Tammy Shelley, and three children soon followed. In 2011, he married Angie Cox, adding two more children. Art became a member of Greater Canaan Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully until his health failed.
